As you can see, I have decided to change the name of the blog again. Child of Sod was not making sense to many people. After many, many attempts at explaining the meaning, I have changed the name.

It is no secret that I am a huge fan of Jars of Clay. Their song, Worlds Apart, has been one of, if not, my favorite song of all time. It had a massive affect on me when I moved from Tampa to Tallahassee ten years ago.

I am the only one to blame for this
Somehow it all ends up the same
Soaring on the wings of selfish pride
I flew too high and like Icarus I collide
With a world I try so hard to leave behind
To rid myself of all but love
to give and die

To turn away and not become
Another nail to pierce the skin of one who loves
more deeply than the oceans,
more abundant than the tears
Of a world embracing every heartache

Can I be the one to sacrifice
Or grip the spear and watch the blood and water flow

To love you – take my world apart
To need you – I am on my knees
To love you – take my world apart
To need you – broken on my knees

All said and done I stand alone
Amongst remains of a life I should not own
It takes all I am to believe
In the mercy that covers me

Did you really have to die for me?
All I am for all you are
Because what I need and what I believe are worlds apart

[Additional lyrics:]

I look beyond the empty cross
forgetting what my life has cost
and wipe away the crimson stains
and dull the nails that still remain
More and more I need you now,
I owe you more each passing hour
the battle between grace and pride
I gave up not so long ago
So steal my heart and take the pain
and wash the feet and cleanse my pride
take the selfish, take the weak,
and all the things I cannot hide
take the beauty, take my tears
the sin-soaked heart and make it yours
take my world all apart
take it now, take it now
and serve the ones that I despise
speak the words I can’t deny
watch the world I used to love
fall to dust and thrown away
I look beyond the empty cross
forgetting what my life has cost
so wipe away the crimson stains
and dull the nails that still remain
so steal my heart and take the pain
take the selfish, take the weak
and all the things I cannot hide
take the beauty, take my tears
take my world apart, take my world apart
I pray, I pray, I pray
take my world apart

Well, well, well. Look who it is. Yes, that is correct, it is me, Greg. I have decided to take a break from "studying" and finish me blog post for King Size BLOGS — Movies. I haven’t had much of a chance to write anything recently since the semester started up, which is good, because I pretty much agree with everyone of David’s picks.

I thought The Good Shepherd and Cars were great. Miami Vice was horrendous. I am beginning to hate anything Michael Mann does. You make a movie called Miami Vice. You use the same names for the main characters, but yet, you find that the theme song is not worth putting in the movie — anywhere! I just don’t get.

Movieing on, get it? Movieing on. Okay, never mind. I am hoping to post some new pictures soon. I have done some fishing recently, and I actually have a picture of me with a fish. You won’t want to miss that picture, it doesn’t happen very often.

King Size BLOGS – Books

Books?  Umm, err, I don’t know that I actually read any books this year.  I know I started roughly ten, but I don’t know that I finished any.  If I did, I don’t remember them.  That fact alone should say they were not good.

What I thought I would do was comment on the Bobby Petrino move (I actually was going to write a seperate post on it anyway.)  And then I will post on Music and have David respond to that, then we could hit movies as the grand end to the 2006 edition of King Size BLOGS.

BOLTIN’ BOBBY

Bobby Petrino, why?  Why did you leave?  Why did you go?  Money?  NFL?  Vick?  Why?

The first time I noticed Lousiville football was when they beat FSU on a Thursday night on national TV; with a former FSU running back no less.  Ever since that night I have been a closet Louiseville fan.  I am a sucker for the underdog stories, and Louiseville was just that.  The small fry beats the big dog.

I saw Petrino pass on coaching jobs and then sign big contract extensions to stay at Louiseville.  I thought, "Finally, a coach that wants to build a legacy at one school."  I was neive and stupid.  Growing up an Seminole, all I have known was one coach — Bobby Bowden.  Bobby has even said that he took the FSU job as a stepping stone to the Alabama job, his alma mater.  As history would show, he never left.  He, like Joe Pa and Penn State understand the importance of loyalty.

Mr. Petrino, I wish you would have stayed.  The "NFL" money would have come.  The National Championships would have come.  You left to take over an Atlanta Falcons team has been built around one whining man, Michael Vick.  I hope that you prove me wrong, but I doubt that you will.

MUSIC

3. The Best of Passion {so far}, Various

Best_of_passion_so_farThe Passion music is always great.  So when they decided to release a two-disc album with the best of Passion, I was excited.  I already own most of the original CD’s, but with most "best of" albums, there are a few songs on the album that were never released.  It brings the best of Passion (what they could get on two cds) to your worship collection.  Even if you already have some of these songs, I highly recommend it for your cd library.

2. Continuum, John Mayer

ContinuumThe first time I heard John Mayer, I hated it.  I really hated it.  Time passed and I eventually came around.  Now a week does not go by that I don’t listen to some Mayer.  Continuum is a nicely laid out album.  From the radio friendly Waiting on the World to Change to the life reflection song, Stop This Train, the album carries its listener through a great ride of music.

1. Good Monsters, Jars of Clay

Good_monstersI know that David thinks I am biased about Jars of Clay and I would rate any album they release as the best of that year, but I have matured and really thought long and hard about this album as the best of 2006.  Good Monsters is not just great lyrically, but it is great musically.  In the beginning of Jars of Clay, they were primarly a four man group with no full-time bassist or drummer.  Over the years in live shows they would have a full band, but it was not until recently that they have included them in videos and directly on their albums.

There is honestly not ONE song on this album that I pass over.  I press play and sit back.  It is rare that an album has that kind of emotion for me.  Part of that may come from that fact that I am such a big fan of the band, but it is a small part.  This album is great.  It is right there with thier first album, Jars of Clay.

Well, there are my music thoughts.  David, what do you think?

Thanks, David.  Sports it is.  I like your choices for Most Enjoyable, they are almost my picks exactly.  I am down with TO being a moron, but to be honest I, for some reason, like Shaq, so therefore, I like the Heat.  (Even though I pretty much don’t like anything Miami.)  But I understand your reasons and think they are valid.  And the Olympics — there was an Olympics this year?

MOST ENJOYABLE SPORTS NEWS:

3. Boise State Fiesta Bowl Fireworks

Technically, this game was played in 2007, but since it was part of the 2006 season I felt I could write about it.  I caught the end of this game, which turned out to be the best part.  This, to me, is football as its best.  Teams playing all four quarters, and then some.  Calling plays that you would only call in your backyard sandlot football game.  I loved it.  It was guts and glory.  The perfect ending to a perfect season.  Now, if Florida can beat Ohio State…does Boise State deserve the National Championship?

2. Saints Came Marching In, and Marching They Did

Being a Tampa Bay Buccaneer fan I don’t have too much love for the Saints, but I do have a heart and I realize there is more to sports then — sports.  The New Orleans Saints coming home and playing in the Superdome for the first time since Hurricane Katrina was powerful.  I am glad ESPN was now hosting Monday Night Football.  If any TV powerhouse knows how to be overly dramatic with "home interest" stories involving sports figures, its ESPN.  But on this day, I found it appropriate.  New Orleans as a city is far from back, but that game and this season were important pieces to the re-building puzzle.

1. The 2006 BCS Championship Game

After the Boise State Fiesta Bowl this year, I heard many people mention they thought it was the best college football game ever.  What?  Granted it was good and very enjoyable, but the best ever?  No.  There are many great college football games every season, but I don’t know that you can put a greatest game ever tag on a game that most likely means nothing but a little extra money to each school.  (Now, as I eluded to earlier, if Florida beats Ohio State, then we can start looking at the 2007 Fiesta bowl as a college classic.)

I am not saying all that to say the 2006 Rose Bowl was the best college football game ever played, but it was atleast for something — the National Championship!  Vince Young was a freak and I was glad to see him and Texas win.  I can’t stand Matt La Nerd!  I personally thought they lost to Notre Dame that year and shouldn’t have even been in the game to begin with.  Then his smug comments after the game pretty much confirmed my distain for him.

I thought this game was great.  Late game heroics, one man taking his team on his shoulders to win it all.  Good stuff.  I doubt this year’s National Championship Game will have the same feel, but we can always fall back on the Boise State game from this year.

Honorable Mention: Rutgers Head Football coach, Greg Schiano, for not taking the Alabama job; Andre Agassi; Zidane Zinedine, if someone called my mom a terrorist, I would head-butt them in the chest too — no I wouldn’t, but thanks for the laugh.; Jeff Bowden leaves FSU.

MOST DISAPPOINTING SPORTS NEWS

Little_t_learns_to_shareTerrell Owens: Like David, I am not a fan of ol’ T.O.  I think he is a spoiled brat who is not great, but good.  He would be great if he would play nice with his teamates.  Since he can’t, in my eyes, he is only good.  (Although, I must admit I liked thought him wearing the Tour De France shirt while riding the stationary bike during the pre-season was pretty funny.  And the fact that "he" wrote a childrens book, that was pretty funny too.)

Dallas Cowboys: Why the Dallas Cowboys you ask?  For getting T.O.  Like David said in his post, they knew his past, so why even take a chance.  A lot of good it did them.

Houston Texans: Mario Williams!?!?  What?  A first rounder, maybe.  But first pick overall.  Boy, you crazy.  And he is rich.

Nick Saban: Man, grow some hangers and at least say you are a canditate for another coaching job.  Don’t bold face lie to us.  I feel sorry for Alabama, I think they settled with you.

FSU Boosters: Now, this one is close to home — literally.  I am glad that Jeff Bowden is gone from FSU.  I have nothing against him as a person persay, but as an offensive coordinator, he was horrible.  He wasn’t the only reason FSU has been bad, but I think he was a big reason.

I am upset at how he left.  I really wish that Jeff would have just moved on.  He, with his last name alone, could get a coaching job somewhere else, and possibly do well.  I also wish the Boosters wouldn’t have paid him off.  $107,000 a year, for the next five years!  The other assitant coaches must be salivating over that deal.  Talk about some leverage.  "So, you paid Jeff half a million to leave.  What are you going to pay me to stay?"

Well, those are my thoughts on sports for 2006 and a little of 2007.  Check with David to see what is up next.

Until then.

Greg.

The views expressed in this post are my own and are alittle bit overthetop sometimes.  My true feelings for the people mentioned in this post are not intirally true…although pretty close.

Well, I finally have some time to sit down and write a little about what I liked in TV this year.  I don’t watch much TV to be rather honest, but of the TV I did watch I liked My Name is Earl and The Office.  I keep telling myself that I will watch every episode of 24, but I never get past the first few hours and then classes start and it is all over.

That being typed, I can’t really agree of a disagree with David’s choices.  Since I don’t watch a steady diet of TV, I will focus this blog entry on the commercials.  Here I go…

Leading the way, as I think it did last year:

GEICO

I have yet to see a bad commerical from them.  Even though the clip below is an older one, it is still my favorite.  I love the caveman’s stare at the end.  Brilliant!!  I will probably never use Geico, but I will always give them props for making great commercials.

APPLE

I didn’t need to see any of these commercials to know that I wanted, no, need a Mac.  I will get one one day, and I shall live happily in hug harbor.

Well, that is it.  Only two commercials.  If I remember anymore I will post.  Now, check back with David to see what he thinks of my picks and what the next catagory shall be.

Until then.

Happy New Year.  Welcome, 2007!  I am excited about this year.  I have many plans for myself this year.  Two-Thousand Aught Seven is going to be a selfish year for Greg Ramer (that’s me).  And I can’t wait to selfishly share it with all of you.

Quick update, since I haven’t posted in a week…

I am back from hunting in Mississippi, where I had a blast with my family up there.  I did kill one deer and got to enjoy a lot of down-time in the woods just ‘getting away from it all.’  I will try and post some more about the trip as well as my entry for the King Sized Blogs of 2006.

Stay tuned.
